Questioning virtual and physical in the age of Internet. 

 

 

 

Further Out by Naomi Ellis

W: “Further Out” was first displayed as part of the group exhibition “because of the Internet”, can you tell us bit more?

 

Naomi Ellis: Two third year students from CSM sent out an email with an open call for an exhibition they were putting on. They wanted to question the value of internet culture and explore the creation of art in virtual space. It was essentially a response to the question: “what is the internet and what has it done to us?” At that time I was looking at relationships between virtual

and physical spaces. I had just returned from a study exchange to Japan a few weeks before, where I was studying sculpture in Kyoto. Whilst over there I was confronted with a kind of fusion between two sides of Japanese culture; it’s traditional side and it’s more technological/futuristic side. For example Kyoto is known to have a “living history.” Many people still practice ancient tea ceremony rituals and beautiful Buddhist temples with carefully manicured Zen rock gardens are dotted allover the place.
